Dedicated Hosting Or Shared Hosting

By Tom Lane

One of the first decisions you face when starting as a webmaster is that what kind of hosting should you get for your website? Should you go with dedicated hosting or shared hosting much depends on your needs. While shared hosting is the cheapest option, it just can't beat the performance of dedicated hosting. After reading this article you should be able to decide which is the right choice for you.

The major difference between shared and dedicated hosting obviously is that when you get a shared hosting account, you will share a web server with many other webmasters. With dedicated hosting you will get a server all to yourself, your websites will be the only ones hosted by that server.

Shared hosting can seem like a great deal with the prices starting from a few dollars per month with unlimited disk space and bandwidth. However there is a catch, you will not actually get that "unlimited everything" that hosting companies are so willingly advertising. If it was true, it would mean that you could host sites like google for a few bucks a month, does that sound realistic to you? Even though most of the hosting companies like to "over" advertise their shared hosting plans, it certainly doesn't mean that they wouldn't be any good. With many shared plans you will get more than enough bandwidth and disk space to run your website or many websites, as long as they are not too complex or have a very high volume of traffic.

The biggest risk with shared hosting is that if you would happened to get a huge spike in your traffic you might get shut down. The factor here isn't with bandwidth or disk storage, but with CPU (Central Processing Unit) cycles. So if you spike even for a short period of time, all your hosting services might get shut down from your shared hosting account.

When you go with dedicated hosting you don't have those same risks of getting shut down than with shared account. You have a lot more control over your account and you will get tons of features. You will also be able to install complex applications, for example things such as online shopping tools without it never affecting the stability of the server. Usually you will also get much better and more professional customer support from your hosting provider when you go with dedicated hosting account. Dedicated hosting is especially good for webmasters running sites with high traffic, like online forums, online stores etc.

So what is the conclusion? Well if you just want to get your feet wet go with shared hosting, but don't expect to get the sun and the moon for a few dollars a month. If you are looking to make some serious business online, there is no question should you get dedicated hosting, you should.

Sunrise - 1 Year on From the ASIA Launch

By James Betchley

Nearly a year has passed since Early Bird Sunrise registration began for the coveted new .asia domain extension, the Early Bird Sunrise period (SR2a) was the first opportunity for commercial entities to register a .asia extension. Prior to this, registration was limited to Asian governments wishing to submit their public bodies and culturally or economically important domains during the pre-Sunrise period.

Throughout the commercial Sunrise period, entry was limited to those companies with registered trademarks trading in on of the 72 Asian countries as defined by ICANN, the period was split into four sub-periods which ran consecutively with the entry requirements becoming less stringent over time, and finally closed for new registration on January 31 2008. On March 26 2008 the .asia Go Live registration period started allowing anyone around the world to buy a .asia domain, and prompted a wave of speculators to begin buying up cyber real-estate from web hosts in the hope that a few companies with sloppy marketing departments had missed the Sunrise window.

So why is the .asia extension so important, when the region has functioned perfectly well over the years with .com and the other Asian regional extensions?

Put simply .asia provides a unifying sense of economic identity for the region which has over 500 million internet users (compared with 315 million in Europe and 253 million in the USA) a number which is growing steadily all the time as the cost of technology decreases. .asia also allows companies to demonstrate an online presence and expand in to a region with one of the fastest moving economies in the world. That said how many companies have taken advantage of their newly acquired domains and actually set up a live site, well fewer that you would expect, a search of the obvious key players (Coca Cola, Pepsi, Ford) returned "error page not found messages" Toyota the third largest Asian company according to Business Week's 'Top 25 Asian Companies' have not set up a .asia page, Sony the seventh largest Asian company's site is "under construction" and 7eleven the mini-market of choice for the region has their domain 'parked' in fact of the well known international brands only Honda seems to have a fully functioning .asia domain. So why this reticence to embrace .asia? Do we expect to see a wealth of new .asia sites before the end of the year? Or, are the big players just happy with the fact that they have secured their plot and are now content to sit on the fence while the price of the cyber real estate rises around them?

On thing does seem certain - this area is bound to take off eventually, and although the transition is slow it is gradually happening, with millions of quality domain names still on offer it could be time to speculate and buy your company's piece of .asia before somebody else does.

Free and Cheap Web Hosting Options For the Thrifty at Heart

By Joseph Nyamache

The internet offers some great deals when it comes to web space and web hosting. However, you do need to search for the best available offers. You should also take into consideration the length of time that a provider has been in business. It is simple to find free web space on the Internet.

All that is necessary is that you undertake a simple Web search such as Google, AltaVista, or Yahoo and the result should bring back options for free web space. Many individuals or businesses search for a place to put their website without paying for the service. Anything from 5MB to 100MB of online web space for the purposes of hosting your web site can be provided by these free services.

There are also gifts such as blogs, copy and paste scripts that are generally Java code scripts, counters, guest books, tracking logs, virtual domain names and more with these free sites. All of these extras are great for those people that have no or little knowledge of how to build a website.

Free services provide benefits that may sound very tempting. However, it is vital that you undertake some research to ensure that the benefits are in actual fact viable. Free services can also bring other unwanted things that need to be dealt with when you sign up for the service. It is general practice that you will be asked to submit to advertising and surveys by completing a form before you are entitled to the free service. Ensure that you carefully read all user agreements that come with the free service.

You can opt for the cheap option but not wish to have advertisements running on your site. You can seek a service that is similar to free hosting, but you would need to pay a small fee to keep your web page ad-free. A service with a monthly fee of $2.95 will be offered by some of these providers with 100MB of web space if that is all that you require, and you can easily upgrade your packages.

Providing Internet Connections to Offices - Server Cabinets and Their Uses

By Jeff Jarred

The web is nothing but a series of computers interconnected which serve information upon request, some computers acted as the client and others act as a server. A server is a computer which for the most part stays on all the time in order to provide the information requested, servers are special computers which hold all the information for web sites and mobile applications to work properly.

Because servers need to stay on all the time, their inner temperature tends to rise so keeping servers in a cool environment is of the utmost importance in order to prolong the life of equipment as well as tool increase its operational efficiency. The server cabinets played a big role in server efficiency, let's take a look at the functions and benefits to server cabinets provide:

Easy to access

Server cabinets have been designed in order to hold equipment which for the most part needs to be serviced and upgraded, that being the case the technician needs to be able to access the equipment from different angles. Server cabinets provide access from the front and rear to make it easy on technicians to access the. All are cabinets offer access from the top in the case of vertical arrays.

In addition, these types of cabinets are built in such a manner that it will be easy to arrange all the cables coming from and to the server.

Keeping servers at cool temperatures

In most cases the servers are stored one on top of the other which can create a lot of heat, server cabinets offer different options for cooling their hardware that has been stored within it, administrators are able to cool down these machines with the use of fans, air conditioning or liquid cooling.

Reducing carbon footprint of other cooling methods

We live in an age when energy efficiency and the impact of technology in the environment are extremely important therefore a big percentage of server cabinets are being manufactured with liquid cooling alternatives which can decrease the carbon footprint compared to other types of cabinets that relied on other cooling methods such as they use of fans and air conditioning.

Server cabinets for office use

Investing in Office Equipment such as servers that will handle a lot of sensitive information is always important but, even more important is the fact that protecting and keeping this equipment from overheating is just as important, this is the reason why those who value their investment choose to store their computers and servers within the right type of cabinets. Shelves and cabinets designed for books are completed different from those designed for computers; one of the differences is that those designed for books will often retain heat which can damage sensitive computer sensors.

Having reliable Internet connections and ensuring that servers are working properly requires more than a skilled technician or system administrator it takes the right type of server cabinets which will protect equipment and offer easy access to technicians for upgrades and maintenance.

Limited Unlimited - What the Hosting Companies Don't Want You to Know

By Jarret Cade

In the ultra competitive web hosting industry, anything that you can do to get a customer is fair game. Companies offer insanely cheap hosting, free domain names, search engine optimization, website development and unlimited resources. It has become such a dog eat dog world nowadays that companies are offering unlimited bandwidth and disk space for as low as $5 a month.

People flock to these web hosting companies and buy up hosting plans left and right without even thinking or reading the terms. Some people plan to genuinely use the hosting plan while others have different ideas. There are those that assume that unlimited really does mean unlimited. However, people quickly find that their account becomes either suspended or permanently banned because they did not read the fine text. You may be wondering how these companies can offer unlimited resources for such a low price right? The truth is that they can't. There is no hosting provider that can offer this kind of deal because if they did they would quickly go out of business.

It's All In The Fine Print

Read the fine print of many companies and you will find that they have set limits on what they exactly mean and what you can actually do with the account. You may decide to purchase an unlimited web hosting plan to store and backup your files in case something goes wrong with your computer. So you start to upload your files and everything is going fine until one day you go to access your account and you can't get in. Or maybe the host was kind enough to send you an email stating why your account has been blocked. More often than not it will be because they do not allow file hosting on their servers. But isn't having a web site on a server file hosting? Yes, but the files are being used in a different manner. Sticking files onto a server for backup or sharing them with your friends is a red flag with most hosting providers. This kind of activity causes a strain on the servers because of the files being constantly downloaded while at the same time possibly being illegal if you are sharing copyrighted content. If you want to store your files on a server there are companies that exist specifically for that.

Limited Unlimited?

Most unlimited plans do have a certain amount of bandwidth or disk space that you can actually use. While the hosting provider isn't going to be up front about it it does exist. Many people get sucked into thinking that they are getting a great deal when really all that they are getting is ripped off. When it comes down to the wire and you exceed the limits the host suspends or denies access to your account. This can become a critical issue if you have been using your account for keeping all your files backed up. However, you may get lucky and the host may consider granting you access to retrieve your files and they may even grant you access again to your account should you promise them that you won't do it again. But more often then not you will be out of a hosting account, out of money and out of the files that you had on the server.

So the next time you are out to purchase web hosting or if you are interested in purchasing it in the near future, remember to always read the fine print. It is usually stated within the Terms & Agreements and while it may not be something that you enjoy reading, if you read the fine print you will really know just what you are getting.

Why Paid Web Hosting is Better Than Free Web Hosting

By Bob Willis

The only upside that comes with free web hosting is of course that it is offered free of cost and the domain name too never costs you a dime. Well, that's about the only upside to free web hosting. This option is great for users who just want to get a feel of the web hosting industry or are interested in just establishing a simple presence on the web. Free web hosting however comes equipped with loads of advertisements in the form of banner ads, pop-ups, floating pop-ups and so on. Furthermore, the user's URL would have the web host's name on it (username.freeservers.com). This could reflect a lack of professionalism for your online website and thereby is not recommended for users who are trying to establish a long-term online presence. Furthermore, free web hosting companies do not offer enough bandwidth as compared to paid web hosting services.

With free web hosting, the user wields less or no control over their account and the company can change their terms and conditions at any time. What's more? The company may even remove your account from their servers if you do not sign up for their paid services. A free hosting account comes with limited features that could stifle and restrict future growth of your website. Now, these limitations can seemingly be detrimental for your website. So if you are thinking of having more than just an online web presence, paid web hosting is a much brighter option to be considered. However, if the user is just planning to use the website as a personal website for friends and family, then free web hosting is a wiser option.

For online business and creating a niche on the World Wide Web, paid hosting is an ideal option. There are a wide variety of web hosting companies that offer highly affordable hosting accounts. These packages are usually equipped with all the essential tools, features and services required to host your website. The control panel available with these accounts allows the user to control and manage various aspects of their hosting account. With paid hosting, the user hosts his/her own domain. So if in the event the user decides to change his web host provider, he can easily transfer his domain to his new provider without losing out on traffic.

Furthermore, paid hosting services come outfitted with various features and utilizable tools as well as 24/7 customer support through toll-free phone, email or even live chat. The user gains access to ample disk space and bandwidth, which is usually missing with free web hosting. However, it is only wise to choose a paid package that perfectly befits your website needs. Do not get lured into "unlimited bandwidth and disk space" schemes. This is because if your website requires a specific amount of bandwidth and disk space, it is futile paying for features and bnadwidth/diskspace that would not be utilized. Therefore, ascertain and analyze your website needs and then select a paid package that is customized to your needs and budget.

Importance of Support in Web Hosting Business

By Bob Willis

Technical and customer support is considered as the foundation of a web hosting company. Prompt customer support is vital for running a successful web hosting company as it reflects the credibility and reliability of the company. It also generates confidence in the potential customer because in the unlikely or rare event of technical errors or considerable downtime, customers can only rely on the company's support system to have their queries and concerns addressed.

Lets pick an example to validate the importance of customer support for a web hosting company. Joe owns an online gift shop and Christmas Eve is the time that his business generates maximum revenue. If on 23rd December, his website experiences technical problems or a probable downtime, he will eventually lose out on sales. Worse would be if he is not able to contact the support team of the hosting company. Such occurrences can adversely affect online business and this is the reason why hosting websites should focus on their support services.

Prompt and accurate customer support is what every discerning customer would look for in a web-hosting provider. This feature can make or break a hosting company, per se. Besides quality customer support, factors like performance, space, traffic allowed, features and pricing structures are also taken into consideration.

A superior web-hosting provider would offer 24/7/365 customer support through toll-free as well as email. Support through tickets is also a common feature incorporated in the support systems and while its promptness is not guaranteed, it can be used if the query is not urgent. However, a quality web-hosting provider should be able to address any ticket queries within 12 to 24 hours of its submission.

While many companies may claim to offer 24/7 customer support, it is a good idea to check their availability by calling their toll-free number on a weekend or at odd hours. This would give you an idea about the credibility and reliability of the web-hosting provider.

For a user, reliable technical support becomes imperative and for a web hosting company it becomes vital to offer this support free of cost in order to gain success in a fiercely competitive industry. In the event of technical errors or other technical failures, the user should always be able to rely on the support system of the company to remedy any technical issues and/or have any of their queries addressed promptly.

Many hosting companies would consider outsourcing their support to other hosting companies in order to cut on costs. While outsourcing support is a cost-effective strategy and the company has to advantage to access expertise in specific fields; the company cannot directly interact with the support staff. A quality outsourced support firm should be able to handle the company's technical support, sales / billing and server administration in a proficient and prompt manner.

A hosting company therefore cannot afford to compromise on their customer and technical support in an industry where users lay prime importance on the reliability and credibility of the hosting company.

Choosing a Reliable Web Hosting

By Veronica Sim

Needs to evaluate on reliability.

When you registered for a domain, you must make sure of its accessibility. If your web hosting is unreliable your customers, clients, employees and browsers cannot get to your website, than it will be a great waste to your resources in building and maintaining your website.

For a retail site, it will be no good if people cannot find it.

There are many internet hosting services, but you must evaluate them for reliability.

Reliable Web Hosting consists of:

1.) Up-time is the first aspect we must look into. It means the amount of time the webpage is up on the internet and accessible.

2.) Downtime means when the servers do their maintenance. Computers require maintenance and internet is made up of millions of computers. Some server maintenance is expected. You must also know how much downtime your internet hosting service will have. Your internet hosting needs firewall protection. You will have much downtime if you do not have internet protection.

3.) The server must be ongoing monitoring than it is a reliable web hosting. The internet is a 24/7 service and you want people to be able to access your website 24/7. Even when you sleep, you want to do business, so you must choose a web hosting with 24/7 service.

4.) Lastly is the backup. Your website server must be backup everyday so that in case of any attack or computer failure you will have the backup to carry on your business.

To purchase a reliable web hosting, you must evaluate carefully the above four areas, thus you will have limitless opportunities of the internet.

Review of FastHosts

By James Betchley

Fasthosts offer one of the cheapest web hosting plans offered, available on Unix or Windows all plans of which there are 3 basic types; Home, Developer and Business are at the time of writing being offered at half price and with a 50 MSN adCenter voucher thrown in for good measure.

Our testers found their service to be very satisfactory all round, with short download times (0.55s for a page size of 250kb) based on a connectivity of 3064 kbps and no down time or customer service problems to note.

Control Panel, the Fasthosts Control Panel proved to be simple to use, and featured a well equipped site builder designed to get you started with only a very rudimentary knowledge of web design.

Support, comes in the form of 24/7 phone and Email support with qualified personnel on hand to deal with whatever problems arise. It should be noted that this is one of the areas which Fasthosts have in the past been criticised, but for the time being at least that problem seems to have been ironed out.

Bandwidth, each of Fasthosts packages comes with unlimited bandwidth, so you can be sure to never exceed your allowances an incur additional costs.

Up Time, Fasthosts provide no up-time guarantee an area that has plagued them in other reviews especially customer feedback, although during our month of testing we encountered no problems with website unavailability.

E-Commerce, Fasthost provide SSL at an additional cost, but an alternative great feature they offer is their merchant account, a package which stops you having to apply for a visa merchant number whilst still allowing you to take credit card payments on line.

In conclusion Fasthosts offer good basic packages which are easily upgradeable with feature such as MySQL, SSL, SEO and more advanced Email functionality such as MS Exchange.

Home Package

1.5 GB Storage, Unlimited Bandwidth Was £3.99 Now £1.99

Developer Package

4 GB Storage, Unlimited Bandwidth Was £7.99 Now £3.99

Business Package
