Fire Protection in Colocation Facilities

One of the major concerns for people considering colocation is that of fire protection. With so many servers in one place generating so much heat, fire safety is a concern. The last thing anyone wants is to come in to check on their server only to find it's been destroyed in a fire. Fortunately fire safety is of the utmost importance in most colocation facilities. In order to avert disaster colocation facilities have the following safeguards in place:

1. Passive Fire Protection (PFP). This is part of the structural design of the building. It attempts to control fire by using fire resistant doors, floor and walls (amongst other examples). This can contain the fire to a specific part of the building so that it doesn't get out of control.

2. Active Fire Protection (AFP). These systems make use of fire suppression and fire detection services. Of course, the systems in colocation facilities are designed so that won't harm your servers should they be activated.

3. Smoke Detectors. These provide an early warning signal. They will detect generated by smoldering or overheated devices before they actually develop into a flame.

4. A sprinkler system allows a full scale fire to be controlled as soon as possible. Of course, every effort is taken to protect your servers from water damage.

5. Clean agent. This can be used to suppress the fire before the sprinkler system has the chance to kick in.

When considering a colocation facility, it's important to realize that fire is a real concern with so many servers in a facility. Ask about the fire protection the facility has and what precautions are taken to prevent a fire in the first place.
