Bandwidth and Connectivity

By Adam Gufarotti

When upgrading to a dedicated server, shop around and look into the options available that would suit your needs to keep the costs down. Bandwidth is one of the most important features to have to ensure high quality performance. Depending on your needs you can get a low cost dedicated server that can provide enough bandwidth for your applications. If you have a heavily trafficked site, you will certainly require a large amount of bandwidth and data transfer capability each month.

Higher Bandwidth

With a dedicated server solution, you should certainly receive a higher bandwidth allowance than you do when your site is hosted in a shared environment. You will also maintain control over how much bandwidth you allow for other sites you may choose to host on your dedicated server. This will give you your own portal to the internet and will not have to suffer slowdowns in connectivity as you are not sharing bandwidth with anyone else. A dedicated server has part of or all of a dedicated connection.

You must though investigate what is offered in the bandwidth plans. Some bandwidth is billed to colocation clients in 1 Mbps increments. A 1 Mbps connection allows the transfer of approximately 340 Gb of data over a 30 day period. You can be billed for only the total combined bandwidth usage on a per port not per server bases whether your company has 1 or 100 servers.

Bandwidth Variables

Some dedicated server services offer unmetered and uncapped connections. An unmetered 10Mbps connection gives a maximum transfer of approximately 3000 GB per month. Unmetered bandwidth dedicated servers are available in 10Mbps, 100Mbps and 1000Mbps allotments. With unmetered bandwidth you are not supposed to be charged for usage or overage. Unlimited bandwidth and high speed connection plans with uncapped download and upload levels prevent additional usage bills.

Bandwidth usually is between 128 Kbps up to 1 Gbps. With fixed bandwidth the information rate of your connection is physically set at the speed you want. Some providers offer burstable bandwidth for its colocation and dedicated server products. This service offers the reliability and price safety of a committed information rate and the value of a monthly data transfer rate.

Upgrading your dedicated server to add more bandwidth, RAM or increase your processor speed can be done at anytime. With your bandwidth package you can also get spam and virus filtering, and intrusion detection and protection.
